You know what’s wild?
We’re all out here setting goals for work, fitness, and maybe even saving for that dream vacation, but what about your reading goals? Yeah, reading. It’s like the secret weapon nobody talks about—and trust me, it’s a game-changer.
A few years ago, I set a goal to read 12 books in a year. Guess what? I crushed it, and it changed the way I think, work, and even connect with people. Today, I’m going to show you why setting reading goals is the move you didn’t know you needed to make. Let’s get into it.
1) What You Read Shapes Who You Are
Books are like cheat codes for life. Seriously. You want to learn about leadership? Read Brene Brown. Want to master communication? Dive into Never Split the Difference by Chris Voss.
When I started being intentional about what I read, it felt like I unlocked a whole new level. Suddenly, my conversations had more depth, my ideas got sharper, and I wasn’t just talking about growth—I was living it.
Your brain is hungry. Feed it the good stuff.
2) Consistency Over Perfection
Here’s the thing: I’m busy. You’re busy. We’re all busy. And sometimes, the idea of finishing a book feels like running a marathon. But here’s the hack: it’s not about speed—it’s about consistency.
I made a rule. 20 pages a day, no matter what. Do that, and you’ll finish 18-25 books a year without even breaking a sweat. Bonus? You’ll start looking forward to those 20 pages because it’s your time. It’s a habit that snowballs.
And if you’re really strapped for time, here’s a game-changer: audiobooks. They’re the ultimate multitasking tool. Listen while you commute, cook, or work out. It’s like squeezing extra hours out of your day. Audiobooks have helped me "read" an extra 20+ books a year without even picking up a physical copy. No excuses—just results.
3) Your Goals Can Be Fun
Not every book has to be a business book. Yeah, I said it. Most of my favorite reads last year were novels. You know why? Because creativity isn’t just for artists. The best ideas I’ve ever had came when my brain wasn’t “working.” Reading fiction teaches empathy, fuels imagination, and—let’s be honest—it’s just fun.
Mix it up. Fantasy. Memoirs. Sci-Fi. Cookbooks. Whatever keeps you turning those pages.
Now it's Your Turn
Alright, here’s the deal: If you’re not setting reading goals, you’re leaving growth on the table. Don’t overthink it. Pick a number. Maybe it’s 5 books this year. Maybe it’s 50. Doesn’t matter. What matters is starting.
And if you don’t know where to start, here’s my challenge: choose one book today. Just one. Read 20 pages tonight. Then 20 tomorrow. Let that first step build momentum.
Books changed my life. They can change yours too. You in?
